Tone pairs

Most Chinese words have two syllables, so tones are really learned in pairs. Each cell has real words from the readings on this site; tap to hear them. Two rules change what you hear: a 3rd tone before another 3rd tone is spoken as a 2nd tone (你好 sounds like ní hǎo), and a 3rd tone before any other tone only dips, it does not rise again.
