喂 — answering the phone
喂 (wèi) starts a phone call, like English "hello?". It is only used on the phone, not for greeting people in person.
喂,妈妈,你好吗? — Hello, Mom, how are you?
……,好吗? — asking "okay?"
Add 好吗 after a suggestion to gently ask for agreement: 星期天回家吃饭,好吗?
