Want to, can, should: Chinese modal verbs

会, 能 and 可以 all become "can" in English but mean different things — learned skill, physical ability, permission.

会 + verbHSK 1

What is the difference between 会 and 能?

会 means someone can do something because they learned it: 会说 = can say, 会写 = can write.

她会说很多数字。 — She can say lots of numbers.

想 + verb — to want to do somethingHSK 1

How do you say you want to do something in Chinese?

想 sits right before another verb to say you want to do that action.

我们想去他家喝茶。 — We want to go to his home to drink tea.

不用 — 'don't need to'HSK 2

不用 + verb means there's no need to do something — different from 不能 ('cannot') or 不要 ('don't want to'): 不用坐车 = 'no need to take a car.'

我每天不用坐车。— Every day I don't need to take a car.

希望 + clauseHSK 2

希望 introduces a whole sentence expressing what you hope for.

我希望天气晴,我们能玩得很快乐。

不得不HSK 5

Means 'to have no choice but to do something' — the action is forced by circumstances, e.g. 天太晚了,我不得不回家.

每次长途旅行,都不得不提前计划好充电的地方。 — Before every long trip, he has no choice but to plan out the charging stops in advance.

How to use this page

These 5 patterns all do the same job in Chinese, so they are worth seeing side by side — the differences between them are easier to feel when they are next to each other than when they are spread across six HSK levels. They range from HSK 1–5.

Grammar sticks through reading, not through lists. Each entry links to the reading it was taken from. Skim the page, then go read one of them and come back when a sentence stops making sense.
