On the weekend, my colleague and I went hiking, and on the way I met a new friend.

We chatted while hiking, and quickly became good friends.

When we reached the top, we sat down to rest, and chatted for a long time again.

Grammar note 语法点

加个 + N + 吧 (let's add each other on...)

加个 + noun + 吧 is how people suggest exchanging contact info in Chinese — 加 means 'to add' as a contact.

我们加个微信吧。— Let's add each other on WeChat.
一边 A 一边 B (doing A while doing B)

一边...一边... describes two actions happening at the same time.

我们一边爬山一边聊天。— We chatted while hiking.
互相 + verb (to do something to each other)

互相 goes right before the verb to mean 'each other' or 'mutually'.

我们互相加了微信。— We added each other on WeChat.
