When my roommate and I first started living together, our relationship wasn't good at all.

Grammar note 语法点

如果…就… — if…, then…

如果 introduces a condition, and 就 introduces the result that follows.

如果有朋友要来,就要提前告诉对方一下。 — If a friend wants to come over, let the other person know in advance.
把 + object + verb + 出来 — expressing things out (result complement)

把 moves the object before the verb, and 出来 shows the result of the action bringing something out.

我们把各自的想法都说出来。 — We each spoke our own thoughts out loud.
