有人yǒurénwèn禅师chánshī什么shénmeshìchán禅师chánshī回答huídá饿èle吃饭chīfànkùnle睡觉shuìjiào
Someone asked a Zen master what Zen is, and the master answered: when hungry, eat; when sleepy, sleep.

The questioner was not convinced: who doesn't know how to do that?

The master said: most people think about work while eating and about tomorrow while sleeping, so they neither truly eat nor truly sleep.

Placed in the present, this ancient story seems practically tailor-made for the smartphone era.

Zen by no means demands that you hide away in the mountains; all it cares about is whether your mind is here at this moment.

Of course, treating concentration as yet another task that must be completed already goes against what Zen was about.

Compared with forcing yourself to "think of nothing," starting by washing one bowl carefully or walking one stretch of road quietly may make it easier to bring your attention back into your body.

An old monk, it is said, often remarked that carrying water and chopping firewood are nothing other than the profound Way: life itself is where the practice happens.

既没有…,也没有…

'Neither A nor B' — the negative use of the 既…也… pair, listing two things that equally failed to happen. 例:那次会议既没有解决问题,也没有安排下一步。

连…都…

把 A 当成 B

'To treat A as B' — 把 fronts the object, 当成 (also 当作) states the identity assigned to it, often a mistaken one. 例:别把客气话当成承诺。
