Last month, my friend Xiaoyu posted a selfie online; unexpectedly, she received a lot of unpleasant comments.
Some people insulted her looks, calling her ugly, and others said she simply shouldn't appear online at all.
Within a single day, more and more people were insulting her, and Xiaoyu was so scared that she no longer dared to open her phone.
This kind of behavior — hiding behind a screen to attack others — is exactly what we commonly call "online violence" (cyberbullying).
What's strange is that most of the people insulting her didn't know Xiaoyu at all.
Perhaps because they can't see the other person's expression, many people actually find it easier to lose their sense of restraint when speaking.
Xiaoyu's mood grew worse and worse; she even began to wonder whether she had really done something wrong.
Later, her older brother urged her to take screenshots of those comments and save them, then report them to the platform.
Slowly, Xiaoyu came to understand: no matter how loud the online insults are, they don't represent the true thoughts of most people.
