Suànfǎ yǔ ǒuránxìngAlgorithms and Serendipity

Nowadays, music, video, shopping, and even news feeds almost all rely on algorithms to make precise recommendations based on users' past clicks and preferences.
This mechanism has admittedly brought unprecedented convenience, letting people quickly find the things they like amid a vast ocean of information.
However, while catering to existing preferences, algorithms have also quietly compressed the space in which chance exists, making opportunities to brush past unfamiliar fields increasingly rare.
Imagine twenty years ago: if a person casually flipped through a record store and happened upon an album strikingly different in style, this would often spark a brand-new interest.
Such a fortuitous, accidental gain could even completely change a person's later career path, and all of this stemmed from the randomness that the environment itself preserved.
Conversely, under today's recommendation systems, the content users encounter is mostly an extension of their past selves, while the possibility of anything unfamiliar and out of place has long since been filtered out, layer by layer.
In the final analysis, what algorithms optimize for is certainty, whereas people's growth, friendships, and even career choices often depend on chances that cannot be predicted.
Therefore, rather than simply regarding algorithms as a fearsome scourge, it would be better to consciously leave room for chance from the very outset of design, letting people once again have the freedom to get lost.

Grammar note 语法点

在……的同时

Indicates that two actions or states occur simultaneously, often to set up a contrast between them, e.g. (While studying, he also works part-time).

Expresses a preference between two options, meaning 'rather than X, it would be better to Y', e.g. (Rather than complain, it's better to act).
