翻译的艺术Fānyì de yìshùThe Art of Translation

HSK 6 reading practice · 199 words · ~3 min
翻译fānyì远非yuǎnfēi把bǎ一种yì zhǒng语言yǔyán的de词cí换成huànchéng另lìng一种yì zhǒng语言yǔyán的de词cí那么nàme简单jiǎndān;它tā是shì在zài两liǎng种zhǒng文化wénhuà之间zhījiān架起jiàqǐ桥梁qiáoliáng的de艺术yìshù。
Translation is far from a simple matter of swapping the words of one language for those of another; it is the art of building a bridge between two cultures.
西方Xīfāng有yǒu句jù名言míngyán:“翻译fānyì即jí背叛bèipàn”,因为yīnwèi任何rènhé译文yìwén都dōu无法wúfǎ完全wánquán忠实zhōngshí于yú原文yuánwén。
In the West there is a famous saying — "to translate is to betray" — because no translation can ever be completely faithful to the original.
以yǐ“缘分yuánfèn”一yì词cí为例wéi lì:英语Yīngyǔ里lǐ找不到zhǎobudào现成xiànchéng的de对应词duìyìngcí,译者yìzhě只能zhǐ néng用yòng一yì整zhěng句jù话huà去qù解释jiěshì这种zhè zhǒng妙不可言miào bù kě yán的de联系liánxì。
Take the word yuanfen: English has no ready-made equivalent, so the translator can only spend a whole sentence explaining this connection too wonderful for words.
同样tóngyàng,把bǎ英语Yīngyǔ的de幽默yōumò直译zhíyì成chéng汉语Hànyǔ,笑点xiàodiǎn往往wǎngwǎng荡然无存dàng rán wú cún;高明gāomíng的de译者yìzhě会huì另起炉灶lìng qǐ lú zào,用yòng汉语Hànyǔ自身zìshēn的de方式fāngshì逗笑dòuxiào读者dúzhě。
Likewise, translate English humor literally into Chinese and the joke usually vanishes without a trace; a masterly translator will start from scratch and make readers laugh in Chinese's own way.
翻译界fānyìjiè有yǒu三sān个ge字zì的de标准biāozhǔn:信xìn、达dá、雅yǎ,即jí忠实zhōngshí原意yuányì、通顺tōngshùn流畅liúchàng、保留bǎoliú原文yuánwén的de神韵shényùn。
The translation world has a three-character standard — xin, da, ya: be faithful to the original meaning, read smoothly and fluently, and preserve the spirit of the original.
这zhè三者sānzhě常常chángcháng互相hùxiāng冲突chōngtū,译者yìzhě不得不bùdébù在zài忠实zhōngshí与yǔ优美yōuměi之间zhījiān做出zuòchū艰难jiānnán的de取舍qǔshě。
The three often conflict with one another, and the translator is forced to make painful trade-offs between faithfulness and beauty.
之所以zhīsuǒyǐ说shuō翻译fānyì是shì艺术yìshù而ér非fēi技术jìshù,是因为shì yīnwèi它tā没有méiyǒu唯一wéiyī的de标准biāozhǔn答案dá'àn,每měi一次yí cì翻译fānyì都dōu是shì一次yí cì再创作zàichuàngzuò。
The reason we call translation an art rather than a technique is that it has no single correct answer: every translation is an act of re-creation.
一旦yídàn你nǐ尝试chángshì把bǎ母语mǔyǔ里lǐ最zuì喜欢xǐhuan的de一yí句jù诗shī译成yìchéng汉语Hànyǔ,就jiù会huì立刻lìkè体会tǐhuì到dào译者yìzhě的de甘苦gānkǔ。
The moment you try translating your favorite line of poetry from your mother tongue into Chinese, you will immediately taste the translator's joys and hardships.
