What HSK 6 covers
HSK 6 works with a cumulative vocabulary of 5000 words — 2500 new ones on top of HSK 5, roughly CEFR C2. It covers philosophy, science, culture, language itself, and arguments that turn on a distinction rather than a fact. The grammar that defines the level is classical residue in modern writing (以, 而, 之), tightly compressed clauses, and idioms and allusions used as shorthand for a whole argument.
The 51 readings on this page are written for exactly that boundary. Every one is original — no textbook passages — and stays inside the HSK 6 word list; anything above the level is listed in the vocabulary panel under the text. Each is 7-10 sentences of genuine commentary, with a thesis and a counterpoint, with pinyin over every character, tap-to-translate, audio you can slow down, a three-question comprehension check and a short grammar note.
A routine that works: read once without looking anything up, then tap the words you missed, then listen and read along a second time. Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
What an HSK 6 text looks like here
Across the 51 readings on this page the typical text runs 8 sentences and 268 characters, about 33 characters per sentence. At HSK 5 the same figures are 9 sentences, 236 characters and 26 characters per sentence, so the step up is mostly in how much each sentence carries, not in how many there are.
每隔一段时间,总有人宣称科幻的黄金时代已经过去。
Grammar you will meet in these readings
The patterns below turn up most often across the HSK 6 texts. Each reading explains its own patterns under the text; the full list with example sentences is on the HSK 6 grammar page.
- 与其……,不如…… — rather than A, better B11 readingsExpresses 'rather than X, it would be better to Y' — used to state a preference between two options. E.g. 与其抱怨环境,不如努力改变自己 (rather than complain about circumstances, it's better to try to change yourself).
- 并非…,而是… — 'it is by no means A; rather, it is B'7 readingsA formal way to negate a common assumption before offering the real explanation: 'is not really A, but rather B'. Stronger and more literary than 不是…而是…. 例:他的沉默并非冷漠,而是深思。
- …之所以…,是因为… — 'the reason X is the case is because Y'5 readingsStates the result first, then explains the cause: 'the reason A is precious/true is that B'. Common in reflective, analytical writing. 例:这段友情之所以珍贵,是因为它经受住了时间的考验。
- 一旦…,就…5 readingsExpresses 'once X happens, then Y follows' — a conditional trigger with a resulting, often serious, consequence. E.g. 一旦下定决心,就不要轻易放弃 (once you've made up your mind, don't give up easily).
- 不在于…,而在于… — 'does not lie in A, but in B'5 readingsRejects one explanation in favor of another, both introduced by 在于 ('lies in'): 'it doesn't lie in A, but in B'. Common for making a distinction between surface and essence. 例:成功的关键不在于起点,而在于坚持。
- 不是 A,而是 B — not A, but rather B4 readingsCorrects an assumption by negating one option and affirming another: 'it is not A, but rather B'. Common for reframing who or what is really responsible. 例:改变现状的,不是运气,而是坚持。
- 固然…,但(也)…3 readingsA formal concessive pattern: 'admittedly / it is true that A, but B'. It concedes a point before pivoting to the speaker's real emphasis. 例:这个办法固然省钱,但风险不小。
- 无论…,都… — 'no matter what..., always...'3 readings'No matter how/what A, B still holds' — 无论 introduces an open-ended condition (often with a question word like 多么/什么), and 都 asserts the unchanging result. 例:无论遇到什么困难,都不要放弃。
What the comprehension questions look like
Every HSK 6 reading ends with three questions in English about what the text actually said — not vocabulary drills. Here is the first one from A Golden Age of Sci-Fi:
How does the text describe the science fiction of the 1950s and 60s?
- It was full of optimism and saw technology as a stairway to the future
- It was preoccupied with climate collapse and surveillance
- It refused to write about outer space at all
Show answer
It was full of optimism and saw technology as a stairway to the future

Practice questions: every reading ends with a three-question comprehension check. A sample of them, with answers, is on the HSK 6 reading comprehension questions page. How this level compares with the others: HSK 1-6 side by side.

HSK 6 questions
What can you actually do with HSK 6?
Read newspapers, essays and most non-technical books; follow lectures and debates; work in Chinese. It is the top level of the old HSK, but it is a floor for professional use, not a ceiling.
How do I keep improving after HSK 6?
Stop studying Chinese and start using it for something else — read about a field you care about, in Chinese. At this level, breadth of subject matter does more than another vocabulary list.
Are these texts as hard as the real HSK 6 exam?
Comparable in vocabulary and register, shorter in length. Exam passages run much longer and test endurance as much as comprehension, so treat these as daily maintenance rather than a mock exam.
