What HSK 5 covers
HSK 5 works with a cumulative vocabulary of 2500 words — 1300 new ones on top of HSK 4, roughly CEFR C1. It covers society, economy, technology, education, tradition and modern change. The grammar that defines the level is written-register patterns, 之所以…是因为…, 与其…不如…, dense noun phrases, and idioms used precisely rather than decoratively.
The 51 readings on this page are written for exactly that boundary. Every one is original — no textbook passages — and stays inside the HSK 5 word list; anything above the level is listed in the vocabulary panel under the text. Each is 7-10 sentences in an essay register, built around one concrete example, with pinyin over every character, tap-to-translate, audio you can slow down, a three-question comprehension check and a short grammar note.
A routine that works: read once without looking anything up, then tap the words you missed, then listen and read along a second time. Five minutes a day beats an hour on Sunday.
What an HSK 5 text looks like here
Across the 51 readings on this page the typical text runs 9 sentences and 236 characters, about 26 characters per sentence. At HSK 4 the same figures are 8 sentences, 195 characters and 24 characters per sentence, so the step up is mostly in how much each sentence carries, not in how many there are.
二十四节气是中国古人根据太阳在天空中的位置,把一年划分成的二十四个时间段。
Grammar you will meet in these readings
The patterns below turn up most often across the HSK 5 texts. Each reading explains its own patterns under the text; the full list with example sentences is on the HSK 5 grammar page.
- 与其…不如… — rather than A, better to B6 readingsCompares two options and prefers the second: 'rather than A, it is better to B', e.g. 与其在家等着,不如出去找他.
- 随着…,… — along with…6 readingsMeans 'along with, as' — one change happens in step with another change, usually at the start of the sentence, e.g. 随着经济的发展,生活水平提高了.
- 不是…而是… — it's not X, but rather Y5 readingsThis pattern corrects a mistaken cause or reason and replaces it with the real one.
- 反而 — on the contrary; instead5 readingsIntroduces a result that is the opposite of what one would expect: 'on the contrary, instead', e.g. 吃了药,病反而更重了.
- 只要…就… — as long as…, then…4 readings只要 states a minimal sufficient condition, and 就 gives the outcome that follows once it's met.
- …,却… (yet; however)3 readings却 marks a turn of contrast within a sentence and is placed after the subject, not at the start of the clause.
- 之所以…是因为… (the reason why… is that…)3 readingsStates a result first and then gives its cause: 'the reason why A is because B'. It sounds slightly formal and is common in written explanations, e.g. 他之所以迟到,是因为堵车.
- 再…也… — no matter how [adjective], still…3 readingsMeans 'no matter how (adjective), still...' — even the highest degree of something does not change the outcome, e.g. 再贵我也要买.
What the comprehension questions look like
Every HSK 5 reading ends with three questions in English about what the text actually said — not vocabulary drills. Here is the first one from The Twenty-Four Solar Terms:
What are the twenty-four solar terms based on?
- The moon's phases each month
- The sun's position in the sky throughout the year
- The number of rainy days in each season
Show answer
The sun's position in the sky throughout the year
More HSK 5 comprehension questions with answers →
Practice questions: every reading ends with a three-question comprehension check. A sample of them, with answers, is on the HSK 5 reading comprehension questions page. How this level compares with the others: HSK 1-6 side by side.

HSK 5 questions
Is HSK 5 enough to study at a Chinese university?
It is the usual minimum for undergraduate admission, often alongside HSK 6 for competitive programmes. Reading speed matters more than the certificate: lectures assume you can process written Chinese without subvocalising.
Why does HSK 5 feel so much harder than HSK 4?
The vocabulary doubles again, and the register changes. HSK 5 texts are written Chinese, not spoken Chinese written down — shorter sentences carry more information and drop the connective padding.
How many new words should I add a day?
Fifteen to twenty is sustainable at this level, and only if you meet each one in context several times. Reading one text a day gives you that repetition without a separate flashcard session.
