考古新发现 A New Archaeological Discovery

考古学kǎogǔxué最zuì迷人mírén之处zhī chù，在于zàiyú它tā常常chángcháng在zài不经意间bù jīngyì jiān颠覆diānfù我们wǒmen对duì过去guòqù的de固有gùyǒu认知rènzhī。

What is most fascinating about archaeology is that it often overturns our fixed understanding of the past when we least expect it.

前不久qián bù jiǔ，一支yì zhī考古队kǎogǔ duì在zài一处yí chù河谷hégǔ遗址yízhǐ中zhōng，意外yìwài发掘fājué出chū一批yì pī保存bǎocún完好wánhǎo的de石器shíqì与yǔ陶片táopiàn。

Not long ago, an archaeological team unexpectedly unearthed a well-preserved batch of stone tools and pottery shards at a river valley site.

起初qǐchū，研究人员yánjiū rényuán根据gēnjù地层dìcéng判断pànduàn，这批zhè pī遗物yíwù的de年代niándài应该yīnggāi在zài数千shù qiān年前nián qián，与yǔ当地dāngdì已知yǐzhī的de文明wénmíng相符xiāngfú。

At first, based on the soil strata, researchers judged that these artifacts dated back several thousand years, consistent with the locally known civilization.

然而rán'ér，碳十四tàn shísì测年cè nián结果jiéguǒ一yī出chū，却què将jiāng年代niándài大幅dàfú提前tíqián，比bǐ原先yuánxiān估计gūjì的de还要hái yào早zǎo好几千hǎo jǐ qiān年nián。

However, once the carbon-14 dating results came in, they pushed the date back significantly — several thousand years earlier than originally estimated.

这个zhège结果jiéguǒ一旦yídàn成立chénglì，意味着yìwèizhe人类rénlèi在zài该gāi地区dìqū的de活动huódòng历史lìshǐ，需要xūyào被bèi重新chóngxīn书写shūxiě。

After the news broke, the academic world was in an uproar — some were excited, while others questioned whether the dating samples had been contaminated.
