HSK 6 reading practice · 198 words · ~3 min
The four characters 道法自然 from the Dao De Jing are often rendered as "let nature take its course," but they are in fact far more complicated than that translation suggests.
The "nature" Laozi speaks of is by no means mountains, rivers, grass and trees, but rather the state of things being just as they originally are.
In other words, what it stresses is this: do not use brute force to twist the original rhythm of things.
This shows up clearly in city planning: a river sealed in concrete is actually more likely to flood when a downpour comes.
The "sponge cities" fashionable in recent years let rainwater seep back into the soil, which is to some extent a modern version of that ancient wisdom.
Of course, reading 道法自然 as an excuse to do nothing at all is rather too passive.
The 无为 Laozi talks about means not acting rashly, not refusing to act at all.
A friend who farms told me that the most critical skill in working the land is knowing when to get to work and when to simply wait.
In a life that keeps speeding up, we might as well stop now and then and look at which direction things wanted to grow in the first place.
