HSK 6 reading practice · 191 words · ~3 min
People often say 'failure is the mother of success,' as if success will arrive right on schedule the moment one goes through setbacks.
However, if this slogan is simply copied and applied mechanically, it will instead conceal the truly complex problems behind failure.
In fact, failure itself does not automatically turn into experience; it merely provides material for reflection.
Once honest and thorough summarizing is lacking, the same mistakes will repeat themselves over and over, even leaving a person unable to recover.
Take a certain vaccine researcher as an example: he went through over a hundred failed experiments, yet still persevered without giving up.
After every failure he meticulously recorded variables and revised his hypotheses, and in the end turned misfortune into a blessing, finding a breakthrough solution.
Conversely, there are also entrepreneurs who, despite repeated losses, refuse to examine their own decision-making mistakes, blaming only bad luck — not only failing to learn the lesson, but repeating the same mistake again and again.
From this it can be seen that the fundamental difference between the two lies not in how many times one fails, but in whether one has built a systematic habit of review.
In the final analysis, rather than talking emptily about the meaning of failure, it is better to cultivate a habit of systematically reflecting on it — only then can failure truly give birth to success.
