How to say if, only if and no matter what in Chinese

Conditions in Chinese come as pairs too: the condition word opens the first clause, and 就 or 才 or 都 answers it in the second.

如果…就… — if...then...HSK 2

如果 introduces a condition, and 就 introduces the result that follows.

不管刮风下雨,我都得带它出去散步。 — No matter whether it's windy or raining, I have to take it out for a walk.

一旦…就… (once…, then…)HSK 5

一旦决定了,就不要后悔。— Once you have decided, don't regret it.

未必 — not necessarilyHSK 5

未必 softly denies an assumption, weaker than 不 or 没有: 我们未必是被别人关起来的。

How to use this page

These 11 patterns all do the same job in Chinese, so they are worth seeing side by side — the differences between them are easier to feel when they are next to each other than when they are spread across six HSK levels. They range from HSK 2–5.

Grammar sticks through reading, not through lists. Each entry links to the reading it was taken from. Skim the page, then go read one of them and come back when a sentence stops making sense.
