知道 vs 认识: know a fact or know a person

What is the difference between 知道 and 认识?

知道 is knowing a fact or a piece of information, or knowing of someone (我知道他叫什么名字). 认识 is being acquainted with a person, having met them, and also recognising something like characters, a place or a road (我认识他, 我认识这个字). You can 知道 a famous actor without 认识 them.
